Amber Smith is a ceramic artist and print-maker based in Whakatū (Nelson). Her work draws inspiration from te ao Maori and the nature surrounding us in Aotearoa. Her ceramics and prints spread messages of love, hope and self-worth.
Her work contains Whakataukī (Maori proverbs) and waiata (Maori songs), both it te reo and English to educate and connect. The words are wise and up-lifting and they give a beautiful feeling to the art, it carries a positive message to give to yourself or to another.
Both the ceramics and prints are made in sgraffito, a method of first staining and then etching into the stain. In the case of the prints this is first done on a large flat piece of clay and then photographed and digitally compiled into each print.
